This was built on the Edwardes Estate. In 1867 Lord Kensington granted this area to a Chelsea builder named Leonard Couling. He took six acres of land in all. He built some of the houses, but to a large extent, he subleased portions of land to other builders for construction.
Robert George Sharpin built Nos. 1-15 (odd) and Nos. 2-16 (even) Kempsford Gardens in 1868-9. He also built the Lord Ranelagh public house. Thomas and John Bissett of St Marylebone appear to have built Nos. 17-23 (odd) Kempsford Gardens in 1870. Couling himself built Nos. 25-47 (odd) and Nos. 18-34 (even) Kempsford Gardens in 1871-3.
The plot sizes in Kempsford Gardens were smaller than in Eardley Crescent.
