This is really dredging the barrel for a derivation, but it is known that the Gunters’ surveyor, George Godwin, was involved in the restoration of a church called St Mary Redcliffe in Bristol, so it is assumed he picked the name.
This part of the overall development was still in non-Gunter family ownership and, unusually, Corbett and McClymont did not take leases, they bought the freeholds. In 1861-4 they bought the land for Cathcart House from Spencer Robert Lewin. In 1862-3 they bought the land for Nos. 35-36, 38-53 and 57 Redcliffe Road from Rev G F Ballard and Robert Lewin, and in 1866 they also bought from them the land for Nos. 58-66 (consec.). Robert Lewin was the father of Spencer Robert Lewin, a partner in the firm of solicitors, Lewins, of Southampton Row who were the solicitors of Corbett and McClymont
Nos. 1A and 2A were built in 1861 by E Curtis Senior under a lease from G Godwin.
In more recent times, Nos. 33 and 34 Redcliffe Road were built in 1951-2 (R. Pollock, architect) and No. 37 in 1951-2 (Kenneth Smith, architect).
