Westbourne Grove

Westbourne was the name of a river which ran through Paddington, Bayswater and Hyde Park to eventually join up with the Thames.  It was damned up in 1730 by George II to create the Serpentine.  The rest of the river lives on as a sewer which runs under Sloane Square station.  Westbourne Grove was just a country track near the river until it was developed in the 1850’s.

On the north side James Bennett built Nos. 122-152 even in 1847-9. In 1850 James Hall built Nos. 154-164 even. Nos. 166 and 168 were built by John Foster of Paddington in 1847. John Maidlow built Nos. 170-176 even in 1852, and T J Bolton of Paddington built Nos. 178-192 in 1848.

On the south side, James Hall built Nos. 155 - 169 odd from 1848-1850. Bolton built Nos. 207-225. J D Cowland built Nos. 243 and 245 in 1856-9.

Thomas Pocock owned the land on either side of Westbourne Grove near the Kensignton Park Road junction. Nos. 282-304 even on the north side and 283-303 odd on the south side were built by or for him in 1851-2.
